“Ditched” explores what it means to be a disposable society at the moment through a large collection of photographs of waste along the shores of Eagle Mountain Lake near Fort Worth, Texas. During the 2014-2015 dry season, I photographed every item I found within a mile of Eagle Mountain Lake along its newly exposed shore, both on location and in the studio, before digitally collaging it.
Like the rest of the world, our rivers are systematically dammed and reservoirs built to provide daily water for cities, flood mitigation, and recreational opportunities. Eagle Mountain Lake is only 14 square miles in size, but is made up of more than 850 square miles of nearby water. This waste from drainage ditches and road drainage systems does not flow into the ocean, but instead plunges into inland rivers and accumulates between dams. The collages reveal the diversity, volume and rate of decomposition of waste in the lakeside and freshwater supply systems respectively. Overall, the series reflects our self-satisfied and reckless discarding behaviour. Whether inadvertently or intentionally, we are inundated with waste.
